1. Background
As part of its social and environmental commitments related to the construction of the Nachtigal hydroelectric dam, NHPC commissioned PHS Cameroon to drill 23 hand-operated boreholes to improve access to drinking water for communities living near the project's area of influence.
2. Project Objective
To provide communities within the Nachtigal project's area of influence with sustainable access to drinking water through the construction of boreholes equipped with hand pumps, addressing the needs of communities impacted by the dam's construction.

4. Nature of the Work
Geophysical studies and borehole location
Drilling and equipping of 23 hand-operated water points
Installation of hand pumps adapted for community use
Construction of superstructures (slab, wellhead, drainage system) for each borehole
Flow rate tests and water quality control before acceptance
[To be completed if Available: average borehole depth, flow rate achieved, brand of pumps installed]
5. Duration and Implementation
The project took place over a 15-month period, from March 2023 to May 2024, covering 23 communities within the Nachtigal project's area of influence, with a phased rollout on a community-by-community basis.
6. Impact
Improved access to drinking water for the populations of 23 communities along the Nachtigal project
Reduced dependence on unsafe water sources (rivers, traditional wells)
Contribution to NHPC's social commitments within the framework of the hydroelectric project's environmental and social responsibility
7. Outcome
The 23 boreholes were delivered and accepted by NHPC in May 2024, marking the completion of this component of the Nachtigal project's social support program.
